The Hand of God: Living a Life of Faithfulness in a Culture of Influence

May 24, 2026

In our culture obsessed with followers, likes, and trending topics, we often confuse influence with significance. Social media has trained us to believe that building a platform equals building a meaningful life. Yet the story of Ezra reveals a profound truth: God honors faithfulness over fame, and one life surrendered to Him can change entire generations.

Who Was Ezra and Why Does His Story Matter?

Ezra chapter 7 introduces us to a man who stepped into one of Israel’s most critical moments. The temple had been rebuilt and worship had resumed, but the people desperately needed spiritual renewal. They had the building, but they lacked revival.

Ezra wasn’t a king, military leader, or political celebrity. He was a scribe – a man devoted to God’s Word. Yet God used this one prepared man to transform an entire nation.

The Gap Between Chapters

There’s a significant 57-58 year gap between Ezra chapters 6 and 7. During this time, the events of the book of Esther took place. The book of Ezra is divided into two sections: chapters 1-6 focus on rebuilding the temple, while chapters 7-10 focus on revival.

What Made Ezra Special?

His Lineage and Credentials

The opening verses trace Ezra’s lineage back 16 generations to Aaron, the high priest and brother of Moses. This wasn’t just a boring genealogy – it established Ezra’s authority to teach God’s law and introduced him to people who had never heard of him.

Ezra served as an official representative of King Artaxerxes. He was a diplomat and political appointee, but by God’s providence, he was also a devoted follower of God who loved His Word.

The Hand of God Upon Him

The key phrase repeated throughout Ezra 7 is “the hand of the Lord was on him.” This phrase appears throughout Scripture, speaking of God’s favor, power, guidance, and enabling presence on a person’s life.

“‘This Ezra went up from Babylonia. He was a scribe skilled in the law of Moses that the Lord, the God of Israel, had given, and the king granted him all that he asked, for the hand of the Lord his God was on him.'” – Ezra 7:6 English Standard Version (ESV)

Why Do We Need God’s Hand on Our Lives?

The hand of God represents His mighty power working in and through us. Throughout Scripture, we see this powerful imagery:

  • God’s hand held back the Red Sea
  • God’s hand shut the mouths of lions
  • God’s hand calmed raging seas
  • God’s hand healed the sick and gave sight to the blind
  • God’s hand was pierced by nails on Calvary’s cross
  • God’s hand rolled away the stone and conquered death

What God’s Hand Provides

When God’s hand is upon your life:

  • You have strength when you’re weak
  • You have guidance when you don’t know what to do
  • You have protection in seasons of fear and anxiety
  • You have provision for your needs
  • You have power to fight battles you could never win alone

As Peter reminds us: “‘Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.'” – 1 Peter 5:6-7 English Standard Version (ESV)

How Can You Have God’s Hand on Your Life?

Ezra 7:10 provides the blueprint: “‘For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the Lord and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.'” – Ezra 7:10 English Standard Version (ESV)

This verse reveals three essential practices:

1. Pursue God’s Word

Ezra “set his heart to study the law of the Lord.” This wasn’t casual spirituality or occasional interest. He deliberately devoted himself to knowing and understanding God’s truth, spending countless hours studying Scripture.

You cannot walk closely with God while neglecting His Word. In our information-saturated culture, people spend hours scrolling social media but little time in God’s Word, then wonder why they’re spiritually weak.

Remember: You cannot feed your mind chaos and expect peace. Deep roots in God’s Word produce stability, especially during difficult seasons.

2. Practice God’s Word

Ezra set his heart not just to study God’s law, but “to do it.” Knowledge of the Bible might impress people, but obedience impresses God. Many people can quote Bible verses, but Ezra refused to just know the Bible – he lived it out.

His life matched the message. We often struggle here because we know what the Bible says about forgiveness, purity, and prayer, but we don’t always practice these truths consistently.

3. Share God’s Word

Finally, Ezra set his heart “to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.” He didn’t keep God’s truth to himself – he shared it with others. As he taught and shared God’s Word, the hand of God remained upon his life.

The Challenge of Our Current Culture

We live in a time when millions of workdays are lost annually due to depression and anxiety, costing the global economy roughly a trillion dollars in lost productivity. Yet the average person spends 4-5 hours daily on smartphones, consuming content where 90% of headlines are negative.

This reveals a crucial truth: we’re building a generation that knows how to build platforms but doesn’t know how to build lives. People are obsessed with being known by others when God wants us to know Him.

Life Application

The greatest need in your life is to have the hand of God upon you. This week, commit to following Ezra’s example by implementing these three practices:

Know God’s Word: Set aside dedicated time daily to read and study Scripture. Don’t just own a Bible – pursue it intentionally.

Do God’s Word: Identify one area where you know what God’s Word says but haven’t been consistently obeying. Commit to aligning your actions with His truth.

Share God’s Word: Look for opportunities to share what you’re learning with others, whether through formal teaching or simple conversations about faith.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Am I more concerned with building influence or building faithfulness?
  • What would change in my life if I truly believed God’s hand was upon me?
  • How can I move from casual spirituality to deliberate devotion to God’s Word?
  • Where is God calling me to share His truth with others?

Remember, one life surrendered to God can change the direction of a family, a church, a community, and even generations to come. The same mighty hand that worked through Ezra is available to work through you today.
