When Opposition Comes: Standing Strong in Spiritual Warfare
May 4, 2026
Life is full of broken pieces that need rebuilding. Whether it’s a struggling marriage, a career setback, or spiritual growth, the process of restoration is never simple. As we learn from the Book of Ezra, picking up the broken pieces of life requires time, effort, persistence, and often starting over more than once.
The Reality of Spiritual Warfare
Why Does Opposition Come?
The Apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (ESV). This word “wrestle” means hand-to-hand combat – it’s not casual resistance but personal, close, and constant warfare.
Your greatest enemy is not what you can see, but what you cannot see. Just as God is in the business of building up, the enemy is in the business of tearing down. This spiritual battle is real and affects every area of your life.
Opposition Confirms You’re Doing Something Important
Every good work of the Lord will be opposed. But remember Jesus’ promise that “the gates of hell will not prevail against his church” (Matthew 16:18). Opposition only rises up for those who are doing something significant. If you’re facing resistance while trying to live for God, be encouraged – it’s confirmation that your obedience poses a threat to the enemy.
How the Enemy Operates: Three Key Tactics
1. Opposition Often Begins with Deception
In Ezra 4:1-3, we see adversaries approaching God’s people with an offer to help rebuild the temple. They claimed, “Let us build with you, for we worship your God as you do” (Ezra 4:2 ESV). On the surface, this sounded wonderful – free help for a difficult project.
However, these people weren’t true worshipers of God. They mixed truth with error, worshiping the one true God alongside pagan idols. As 2 Kings 17:41 reveals: “So these nations feared the Lord and also served their carved images” (ESV).
The most dangerous deception is not what is completely false, but what is partially true. If you mix truth with error, you don’t get a better version of truth – you get corruption.
Standing for Truth in Love
Not all religions are acceptable to God. While this may be politically incorrect in our pluralistic culture, it’s biblical truth. Standing for truth in love means:
- Speaking the gospel to unbelieving friends
- Refusing to compromise biblical truth
- Living differently than the culture around you
2. Opposition Often Uses Discouragement
When deception failed, the adversaries changed tactics. Ezra 4:4 tells us: “Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to build” (ESV). They used lawsuits, lobbyists, and lies to crush the spirits of God’s people.
If the enemy cannot corrupt your work, he will try to crush your spirit. He knows that if he can get you discouraged, he doesn’t have to defeat you – you’ll stop yourself.
Overcoming Discouragement: A-B-C-D-E
When facing discouragement, remember these five steps:
A – Abide in God’s Love: Never forget how much God loves you, regardless of circumstances or criticism.
B – Be Honest: Don’t pretend with God. He doesn’t bless performance; He blesses honesty.
C – Consider: It’s not about you. Discouragement grows fastest when you make everything about yourself.
D – Deploy Your Pain: Trust that your deepest pain will become your greatest ministry. Use it to help others.
E – Embrace Eternity: Focus on eternal perspective. This life is temporary; whatever you’re going through won’t last forever.
3. Opposition Often Uses Intimidation
The final tactic involves intimidation through false accusations, exaggeration, flattery, and outright lies. In Ezra’s account, the work on the temple stopped for 16 years due to intimidation and fear.
However, the enemy may delay what God is doing, but he cannot defeat what God has determined. God will fulfill His purpose in your life down to the minute detail.
Remember Who Has Already Won
The Battle is Already Won
Jesus declared in John 16:33: “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (ESV). We are fighting a battle that Jesus has already won.
The pressure around you will never be greater than the power within you. You don’t need more confidence – you just need more awareness of who’s with you.
Boldness is Power from God
Boldness is not a personality trait; it’s power from God. The early church prayed for boldness in Acts 4:31: “And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness” (ESV).
Life Application
This week, identify one area where you’re facing opposition or discouragement in your walk with God. Instead of retreating, take it as confirmation that you’re doing something significant for the Kingdom. Apply the A-B-C-D-E method when discouragement hits, and remember that the battle has already been won through Jesus Christ.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Am I allowing deception to creep into my faith by compromising biblical truth?
- When I face discouragement, do I turn to prayer first or try to handle it on my own?
- How can I use my current struggles to help others who are facing similar challenges?
- Am I living with an eternal perspective, or am I too focused on temporary circumstances?
The enemy will use deception, discouragement, and intimidation, but remember – you serve the God who has already overcome the world. Stand firm in truth, take your burdens to the Lord in prayer, and move forward with boldness knowing that victory is already yours in Christ.
